Hocus Pocus and the All-New Sequel—Do I need it?

Okay I need to speak to someone about this book! To start Hocus Pocus is my all time favourite movie, I think I have seen it upwards of 50 times and If I ever get a black cat his name will be Binx.

So, when I heard a few months ago that they were making a sequel to the movies I was so pumped. I know many people have mixed feelings, but I’m pretty exicted. I’m not a fandom purist and I don’t expect it to be the best movie ever or to compare to the original, I’m just hoping to watch a fun witchy movie.

So about a month ago I saw someone had a Hocus Pocus book (I’m pretty sure it was a review copy) and I knew I immediately needed to find out what it was. So I ended up googling for the title, which is actually a bit difficult given that Hocus Pocus is a title used by a couple of books. I’ll leave a link here if you want to read the synopsis. Here it is!

So from some research I discovered that this is a book version of the first movie and the second movie together. It seems to be written by a ghost writer and it comes out in July.

Now the question is, do I need this book?

I’m so conflicted! For some reason I think I’d like reading this book more if it was only the sequel, for some reason reading a novel based on a movie seems really odd to me. Especially in this case because I know the movie oddly well. I think I prefer reading a book first then experiencing the movie, but that might just be an odd personal quirk.

I am also slightly put off by the fact that this is written by a ghost writer, so I can’t really know too much about the writing style.

But, it’s a Hocus Pocus Book. I might just need it for all of that witchy goodness. Also the cover art is gorgeous and might be worth it only for that!

Oh gosh, I think I may have just convinced myself that I need this book! If you love Hocus Pocus I’d love to hear your opinion on this! Or if you have read a book based on a movie , I’d love to hear about it!

  1. Buy the book haha. I’ve read a novelization of My Girl and it followed the movie exactly. It made me cry just as much as the movie. I also own a novelization of Gilmore Girls. It also follows the show. Not exactly high literature and no new details but I really enjoyed them! 🙂

      1. Lol yeah there are only 4 books. I have the first one and it’s in Rory’s pov, if I remember correctly. (its been a while since I read it lol). It actually gets pretty far into season 1 of the show. Would recommend!! 😀

  2. You have me convinced I need this book too! LOVE Hocus Pocus and was pleased to hear that a new movie is being made. I read somewhere that all of the original actresses were interested in being in it, but that’s all I’ve heard. I’m going to go find that book!

  3. I am also torn about this. I feel like it was created as a movie so it would be best as a movie. So I would want to experience it as such. Especially since I constantly see things written as book just not translate to the screen properly.

I also love this story so much, and love all things witchy.

  4. Is the sequel actually happening? I feel like this was announced and then denied years ago and my heart broke a little.

  5. The quick answer to your question – yes. Yes, you do need the sequel. Now I know that there is a sequel/ book I need it too. I loved the movie and still have to watch it every Halloween without fail otherwise it just doesn’t feel right.
